Red Ribbon Week

October 24 - 29 2016
Above the Influence

History of Red Ribbon Week
RRW began after the kidnapping and murder of Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Kiki Camarena who had been working undercover in Guadalajara, Mexico for over 4 years. His efforts led to a tip that resulted in a multimillion dollar narcotics manufacturing operation.  In Agent Camarena’s hometown, there was an outpouring of support where citizens wore red ribbons in his honor and memory.  Those people became a voice for prevention in order to reduce the demand for illegal drugs and illegal use of legal drugs in America which became nationally recognized by President Regan.  Today millions of people nationwide celebrate Red Ribbon Week by doing primary prevention in public schools.
